Voice for OSG

Its been boiling & cooking for a while, but it's finally arrived. The mumble voice solution for OSG called "whisper" has been released. You can find instructions and download it HERE. It will hopefully soon be implemented / avaiable for various viewers aswell. Server module, client and source code are available in our Links section.

Auroragrid has opened up its own portal pages, so you can get the latest news and progress on it directly at the source, by visiting http://aurora-sim.org/

One OSG update was issued last week, and there have been rumors on a new update, which again will be mandatory to remain connected. Read the latest update on it HERE.

This leaves us with the last news update of this year, being the Red Dragon VIII being ended in the first quarter of next year. We will start working on a smaller but more suitable region for our new build, the Red Dragon IX. Shops & galleries will remain at a nearby region.

Red Dragon wishes you a Happy 2011 and be carefull if you play with fireworks.

Club Icey

It's quiet times in the virtual worlds as most people are enjoying the holidays. It's not as quiet as some would think, as Opensim based worlds are picking up in fast pace qua traffic and number of users.

Dispite it being calm on the social activity / community part of things, it will not keep us from showing you another cool OSG club, called Club Icey. It's found on region Icey and covers 2 sims in a nice winter theme.

As we have not spoken to the owner yet, more info on it will follow at a later time, but meanwhile we just try to ensure you can keep track of any entertainment venue in the grids, and check the places yourself.  Happy Holidays !

Almost Christmas

May this Christmas be the first of many,
Each more joyous in our growing love,
Revealing more of happiness than any
Riches might provide or pain remove.
Years flow like an unrepentant river,

Carrying the soil of life away,
Holding far more than they can deliver,
Rushing past the certitudes that stay.
In love there is an instance of forever
So shy and lovely it eludes the eye,
The sense of being home when we're together,
More enduring than a reason why.
As love is born of passion, borne by will,
So may for many years we choose love still.

Red Dragon would like to wish you and all those you love a Merry Christmas, and a Happy & Healthy 2011

Aurora Compatibility with OSG

After last weeks topic on Auroragrids Update we recieved some great feedback from a few of its developers, clarifying a few misperceptions regarding its workings and development. To continue on that note, you can scrap the " No OSG compatibility " as of today there is a binary available that CAN connect to OSG.
You can find a pre-compiled version of it HERE  .

The Aurora team proves very devoted, in both building great new code, and on keeping it's community up to speed with the latest relevant info. This confirms the last words of Whitestars earlier response : "Our code is indeed changing fast as we are in rapid development and evolution, along with more dev's coming online with the project, it will further accelerate and result are being seen as response to issues is very fast."
Well, from a users perspective thats great news, and we love the input. Thanks, and keep it up !

The quickest way to get in touch with Aurora-Dev team yourself, should you have questions, is by scrolling down to the  IRC webapp which you can find completely at the bottom of this page. More information on Aurora and its setup can be found in our links section.

LBSA Christmas Theme

Santa Dev's flew through the Plaza, and uploaded a charming Christmas theme to OSG's landing area overnight. They worked hard in the last year, with all upgrade's and bugs, and the revamp, and despite the moan an groan and tons of questions they get, still being friendly and open to your community and doing little things like this for all of their users. I say they deserve a christmas card of us all. You can mail one HERE and the little mail elves will likely take care of all the rest. On behalf of Red Dragon and all its members, we thank you for your efforts, this community, and the freedom we enjoy here. Amen.

Tomorrow is this years LATEST PARTY in D&J's Close Encounters region, so make sure not to miss out on one of the last chances you have to wish your friends in the community some happy holidays.
Saturday, CyberBohemia has a new Vernissage with Art from H.J. Kaeppeler , themed Mask & Pantomime. You can find more info below in our Calendar, or by visiting their sims or website.

And afterwards, well it will be Santa-time. Enjoy, and make sure to check back inbetween. We will keep updating the threads when info reaches us. Also  dont forget to check the Blogs down below in our links sections. They also get updated regilarly. ( Hypergridbuisiness for instance has a nice article with stats and details on general Opensim Growth over the past year, koinup recieves daily pictures etc. etc. ).

AuroaraGrid Update Available

Today a new version of Aurora server was released. You can grab your copy by clicking HERE . The version is already pre-complied for you. For instructions on how to connect to aurora, please visit the the Infopage.

Some major changes were made, to the backend technology. Aurora uses it's own script engine now ( No rubust, no Xengine, its now called Aurora.Server and for what we've been told, its blazing fast. (Estimated 4-7 times more speed than OSG , but don't pin us on these numbers, mileage may still vary depending on your machine & network infrastructure).
Above means that there is no OSG compatibility any longer, so connecting to the OSgrid with an aurora server will be impossible (at start it looked like aurora was maintaining compatibility, but they chose their own path now).  If you create a setup for Aurora, make sure to use different databases for OSG and Aurora, so you dont find yourself in a world of pain. Keep posted on updates, as the Aurora team changes builds faster than you change underwear. Also the Login process is about to change, we will post more updates when we have relevant news on it.

We also found 1 tiny issue. If you import an OAR, you become the creator of all prims you imported. So a humble apology to all the OSG creators, if you have problems with us having your creations on one of our Aurora regions, without you being labeled as the creator, feel free to notify us. Don't worry about any -*RDS*- stuff you have. As long as you do not SELL our builds, you can do as you please with them, and we don't mind our name not being there as creator.  Early christmas present, in the form of No Hassle.

Other news : NotePad++  updated to support LSL a bit better.

Please check the response from a member of the Aurora Development team HERE for the "Inside Facts" on above article. Credits & Thnx to WhiteStar Magic.

OSGrid Update Available.

A newer version of OSG was released this week. You can download it at OSGrid directly . The Red Dragon Regions are upgraded and up to speed with this new version. Kokua viewer (former imprudence) will unlikely be updated this year, as its Dev's decided to take a december holiday.

Quick notes on how we upgraded 10 regions in 3 instances  :
- Download OSG file & extract it 3 times in 3 folders
- Look for changes in new opensim.INI file
- Copy Opensim.ini / config-include/Gridcommon.ini / regions/regionconfig.ini  from old to new directory's
- Boot the new versions. (yes, it is that simple). Mind that if you have DrawprimonMaptile enabled, it will take a while to start if you have many prims. Just be patient. We always perform a restart after first boot.

If something fails, we can quickly revert back (old install is still there). I post this as I still hear people mentioning  that they'll be copying a new installation over an older existing folder. If you WANT bugs and headaches to hit you, and no rollback option, thats the way to go. Mind that on SQLlite you either need to manually copy the old database files (.db) , or import an OAR after any upgrade.

Other news ? Make your own animations with the Kinect maybe ?  (Likely more potential than using it as a joystick  ). Also the links section below has been updated. If you have great stuff we missed, feel free to share it.

Page Success !

Bade Plaza Tower
I have recieved a lot of nice responses on this shiny new Blog, and we just hit the 1000 pageviews, which is pretty cool for a 3 week old page. It also indicates people love to have news and updates on their favorite grids, so we will try and keep things running here. Thank you for your interests & feedback sofar. The real goodies are down in the links section though, updated regularly. All the tools & goodies you need to make the prim / texture / sculpt / mesh / scripted stuf you always wanted to have.

I feel small....
Since LBSA plaza (the welcome area, and "hangout" of OSG) was down this morning, I decided to hop around the grid a bit and shoot some pictures to put in this article. The one above is Bade Plaza, of which i just love the architecture. Click the picture for a higher resolution image. Notice my AV in the 2nd picture, left bottom corner, so you get an  idea on the size of that tower. Bade Plaza is easily reachable by the Plaza teleporters, that are found everywhere in OSG.

Zapping3
The picture to the left and below are shot on a region named Zapping3 which is a steamworks build in it's characteristic rusty metal look. I got tipped on that one by the OSG forums, so decided to fly in and capture some pixels. Very nice spot, good for a closer look, as you can see.

I also recieved some questions on why the Red Dragon club and Stores are not reachable, or why people can't teleport to "fill in region here". The reason is simple. Many OSG users host their own sims, from their own homes. And I, for one, shut down my servers when i go to sleep. Which results in an average uptime of 16 hours a day. This means that when you connect and you get a destination unreachable, likely the sims are disabled. The only thing you can do is try again later.

Zapping3
For other regions, it's advisable to do a search, and IM the region owner. After the grid upgrade last month, some users relocated or even renamed their sims. Sometimes a region is supposed to be up, but crashed in the background while the sim owner is unaware. (For example : A region can crash / hang when people try to login when the sim is still starting up. Workaround for that is available HERE ). Also people come and go, some regions will simply no longer exist. These will be removed from the map, when the grid administrators purge it to clean it up. With thousends of regions it should not be too hard finding a "live" one, and generally there are always people at the plaza's to help out if you run stuck, or dont know where to go. Keep exploring. There are beautiful things to be discovered.

Sneak Peek

On Red Dragons Wall Of  Fame, you will find landmarkgivers to various regions and venues in OSG. Eevery once and a while, we put up one with a "Sneak Preview" This is an LMgiver with no picture displayed. Often it indicates a sim or region that has not opened to public yet, or is awaiting loadtests. In any case, chances are small you will have seen it before, as these regions tend to be sparkly new and still in development.

This weeks "new kid on the block" is Club Shark. Hosted in the US by Reo Landar, on a single region. The sim took a full week to build, and there working on the finishing touches before they can open the gates to the masses. We have been there already and "Approved it to Party". Stylish modern build, a nice wide dancefloor, stage, a variety of dances, and an own unique atmosphere, with awesome light and FX like a club is supposed to have. We advise you to go check it for yourself. You can find this club on Sharks Region in OSG. We have no ETA on the opening party for club Shark yet, but likely you will find an announcement on the region when the doors officially open to the public.

Region ShowCase "The Navigators"

Cambrian
The navigators sims consist out of 22 regions, and are administered by OSG residents Mitch Shelman  (Netherlands) and Ni Lemon (Portugal). They met in SL 3 years ago, and moved over to OSG approximately one year ago. For less than the tier they rented a single region for previously in Secondlife, they now have a virtual private server, keeping their 22 sims online 24/7. The regions are actually a massive Art project, each with its own unique atmosphere, and a huge variety of objects, biotanicals, surrealistics and other scenery's.

Random Helicoptershot:

Technical information on the regions: The navigator regions run on a hosted datacenter VPS environment in germany, on a win2k3 machine, with 6 GB RAM on a 100/100 Mbit connection. It's installed and kept up to date with the latest OSG versions. The regions harbour approximately 4000 scripts and around 30.000 prims total.  Each region has its own theme, and the 22 sims are separate regions. So mind they have borders (It's not a Megaregion).

Dooms End Inferno
22 regions is a whole slab of land but as you can see from the pictures, all transitions between sims are visually fluent. Large distance views are awesome. Despite each region having is own theme you will feel submerged in the wondrous world of the Navigator builds.  Enjoy the Art, the beautiful variety of nature, and various freebies in the shops. Not all builds on the regions have permissions set, most of the "goodies" can be found in the shops. If you see something you really want, and its not available, asking can help you a long way. Mitch & Ni love to share their creations. Along with the inspiration of other creative minds, and OSG's helpfull community, it's one of their main reasons to be in this grid. Sharing is very satisfying.

Descent into Maelstroem
When asked for their personal favorite regions, Descent into the maelstroem, (right picture),  Graciosa, (below) and Inferno (above) regions were mentioned. These regions bear the unique expression of its creators. " Immersive Region size artwork " is the official name, but it translates into : You should TP there, and go see it, as you will not find this view nor experience elsewhere.

The pictures are still, and they cannot give you the experience from wandering in this strange worlds. Red Dragon tip ? Walk instead of fly, and rezz your AV an extra pair of eyes. It needs them to capture all the beauty. The teleport system is awesome, but we advise a healthy walk.

Graciosa
Apart from all the beauty in their regions, Ni & Mitch run various shops elsewhere, for instance the Tugtastic Shops are by their hand. You can find them in the Navigators regions, as well as on Port azure west. Most contain Home Decoration, and biotanicals, flowers etc. As you can see, they love building and decorating, in prim, sculpt, mesh or whatever technology available to wield their creativity. They love to experiment with shapes forms colours textures and scripts. Also check out the greenhouse built by Ni. We believe its the biggest greenhouse in any grid, and it's a beauty.

The regions are not planned for opening in other grids. Navigators stick to OSG for their Main regions. They love OSG's free spirit, and have full confidence in its improvements for the future. Their ultimate goal is to keep crafting the creative, and making digital art, and OSG has proven to be the very best platform to do so. If you haven't visited these regions, you've missed out big time on what OSG can do. Feel free to visit them any time. The regions are all public, and up 24/7. Open the OSG map, and find Cambrian Explosion when you have a spare hour. (You wont be able to see all in less time:)
You can also find them on Red Dragon's "Wall of Fame" located at Red Dragon Shops.

Club Omega Kraftworks, MyOpenGrid, and upcoming News

Omega Kraftwork Club
I missed their opening party yesterday, But here is a screenshot of what the new Club Omega Craftwork looks like. I do recommend to go and watch for yourself (find it at Omega Region in OSG), as it is a Dynamic Lightshare environment, filled with animations, light, smoke and particle effects, which are hard to capture in static imaging. It looks very appealing, and has a great atmosphere.

Soon Red Dragon will start posting Region Showcases, of places worth to visit in OSG / Aurora and where you can find the action.

Also a new Grid found its way to the internets. It can be found here : http://myopengrid.com and has a fair share of the users you normally found in OSG, trying their luck in a new Grid. Since the upgrades to 0.7 some stability problems hit the OSgrid, which results in a small exodus of people that prefer stability over innovation, or are simply unable to overcome the issues that haunt & frustrate them. They try their luck in other grids.
To connect to Myopengrid, use http://login.myopengrid.com in the Grid Manager after you made an account on the page above. Red Dragon will not track or start sims in this grid, but will keep you posted if we get any news on it.

That's all for now, check back soon for the 1st official Red Dragon "Region Showcase". This will be a photo article of a region in OSG, and a small interview with it's owner (s).

Note : a new OSgazet themed "FUN" is available (issue 8) at the newsstands. Might want to grab a copy, as you cant have too much of that. Newsstands can be found at most plaza area's in OSG.

Machinimas

Although there are not many events throughout the week, OSG is a nice place to dwell. It has some awesome sims, with great atmosphere, in various themes. Also, there are very creative artists, making awesome machinima's for you to enjoy. Below you will find 2 machinima to watch. Both are made on OSG, first by Ci Sense, second one by the Grid administrator, Nebadon Izumi. You might or might not have seen them, but they deserve some attention, epecially since they take days to make, and well, see for yourself....

"Winter Love" by Ci Sense

"Space Navigating OSG with 3DConnection" by Nebadon Izumi

If you have great machinima's you'd like to share, let us know. In the new Red Dragon IX we have plans for a videowall displaying Machinima's. The only requirement for us to publish them, is that they need to have been shot in an Opensim based Grid.

Preparing for Winter

Dont you love winter Themes ? Those sims that change over into a wonderful winter decor, with showy white trees, sleds and raindeer, and Santa´s. Many people really put in great efforts to make their sim a cosy winter spot. The picture below is taken at OSgrid, Christmas Land. Click to enlarge.  Location on OSG is : http://slurl.com/secondlife/Uusi%20Wilhola/75/190/477

In case you wonder why Red Dragon Sims are not covered with snow ? Because us dragons Hate the friggin Cold. We turned up the heater a notch or 2 and will remain Hot 'n Tropical. So when your AV is done freezing its pixelbutt off, you can come feel the heat and party it warm in our Club.

If you like great scenery, OSG has got many places that are really worth vising. Since the grid upgrade to 0.7 you will find that some sims have become "unavailable" because their either offline, or moved to different locations. But there are many sweet spots still around. Share us yours !

TGIF

Each Blog needs a TGIF topic, and so does this one. Today is Friday, (at least, it is in this part of the world) which means it's Party time at D&J's Close Encounters Region. Hostess "Doro" and DJ "Jay" are active in OSG for quite a while, and run a weekly event to entertain it's residents. Visit and  you will find many of the "familiar faces" running around OSG, and possibly meet some new.

As you might have experienced OSG doesn't have a huge number of organised events, manly due to the nature of the home connections on which many sims reside, and many residents using it as private retreat, sandbox, testproject, etc. Red Dragon will start organising weekly events, mainly party's, but were also considering themed events, possibly classes, and maybe even some "live music". Keep track of this page and you will keep informed of where and when there's any action.

Since not all seem to have noticed, Profile, Picturs, Interests, Picks, they all work. Add your favorite places, so others can find the same great places you visit.

VidaVirtual Serving the Community

Since OSgrid made the jump to 0.7 a lot of time of the Dev's has likely been going to troubleshooting and stabilising things. (Thumbs up for that). Since the website lost some of its social functionalities, various alternatives have been provided by the community, like this very blog. And many others had similar ideas.

Today I registered at Fernando Olivera's site called Vidavirtual . Fernando is the owner of the Festa24 regions in OSgrid. His webby is a very nice community site, with all the features and whistles one could ask for. If your a OSG user, missing the wire, a place to upload pics etc, you definetely want to check it out.

Also other pages emerged,  like Open-sim.nl on which OddBall Otoole is planning to post script collections and tuturials, are worth a visit. Check out the links to the blogs, pages and other goodies. They are updated regularly, with all the stuff you just needed.

Well, back to the Band that Hijacked LBSA plaza tonight. Yeah you read it right. Sometimes, all wake up, grab their drums and guitars, they hop on the mic, and entertain the newcomers :) Spontanious party's in no script zone's. Curious ? Grab a viewer from the downloads and join us......

Events in weekends

In following of the great "Friday party'"s at D&J's close encounters region, Red Dragon Nite club will start firing various events in the weekends. Information on events can be found (and posted) in the event calendar at the bottom of this Blog. Our goal is to provide the community with some fun, outside the "maintaining your sims" role most have on this grid.

As we know there are many more DJ's than clubs in OSG, we hope to provide a podium where you can come share the fun, so if you feel like having a session, feel free to contact us, to schedule an event. We can provide in both the space to party, as in a stream, however, DJ's with an own stream are preferred (less strain on the sims, as these are on the same server as our shoutcast).

Also, if you have your own venue, keep us informed of what, when, where, and we will make sure to share your efforts to enjoy the community reaches our members and visitors.  If you drop us a landmark and picture of your sim / shop / club we will place it on our Wall of Fame, which is located in our shopping region.

If there are no active events, it's still fun to look around and grab some of the full perm stuff on the 9 sims the Red Dragon is built upon. You can find all kinds of cool stuff and places like : D&J's furniture, Fluffy's gestures, Lalinda's Finest, Perfect Pillars, Gallery Jorink, some picuters of Red Dragons history, *RDS*- Design textures and prims, a huge photostudio, 3 clubs, a pop podium, a cinema, our wall of fame, some very relaxed scenery's (great for Photosessions), skybuilds like our must-have Air balloon and  Blimp, and much, much more.

Hope to see you around @ the -* Red Dragon Nite Club *-

Updates

As a work in progress is supposed to, here are some new updates to the Blog. Video's with awesome machinima,  links to various handy OSG tools, scripts, textures, a list of clubs in the grid, a map of the 9 sim Red Dragon Region, search functions, links to other OSG weblogs and an Event Calendar, on which you can drop your own OSG events ( If subscribed, this is on invite only, to prevent spammers).
Also a shoutbox, forum, tagcloud, links to various other OSG Blogs, were added. The layout needs work, but the focus remains on relevant content for now.

If you have content you would like to see on these pages, please feel free to hit us with an email, or an inworld NC. (Mind that IM's do not always make it across !!). You will see the layout change overtime, as we add more cool stuff for your convenience.

Also the plans for Red Dragon IX are slowly taking shape, and one of the best builders on OSG has offered to assist building in what is to become the greatest RD Club build in its 4 year history. We will keep you posted on the progress, but as this will be quite a project, don't expect this to finish in this decennium.

Today we also recieved notices a new club opened on the BASE sims. It's called Metropolitan, and as soon as we attend a party there, you will see the pictures appear on our FlickR pages.
Thats all for now, thanks for reading, and check back with us Soon !

Red Dragon Blog

Welcome visitor of the 2d flatweb.

This Blog will update you on events held at Red Dragon Nite Club, in your favorite Grids. Red Dragon was founded in SL 2007 by JamesHenry Palen. The House DJ Foxx Bode bought it, and with help of some friends and a vast community, made it a big & succesfull club. Red Dragon build VII was serving over 4000 members by the time Foxx retired from SL.

In April 2010 the Red Dragon Nite Club in OSgrid was started, and it rapidly grew to 200+ members. This  dispite not having huge events like the ones it's members are acustomed  to. Red Dragon VIII resides on the center of a 9 Sim region, filled with cool fullperms free items. 2 of the sims offer free spaces for your shops / galleries / landmarkgivers / etc.

On november 19th 2010 Red Dragon also opened a 4 sim region on the Auroragrid. This grid is in a testphase, and for now a copy of the OSG red dragon VIII sims is there, but the plan is to create Red Dragon IX there, which should be the "model" for Red Dragon X, the final edition of the 1st generation clubs.

That's all for now, this page will be updated if exiting things happen. Feel free to visit us in any grid. Enjoy the freebies, great tunes, and if you have never done so, 3D worlds can be fun. Were newcomer friendly, and the links that wil appear on this Blog will provide you with the required info to get you started.

Below you will find an event calendar. To prevent it from being spammed, you can mail an access request, after which you will be allowed to post your events, which eventually will also update our twitter feed.
